What’s Black and White and Red all Over?

I like to think that everything happens for a reason, and that ninety percent of the time, that reason is Céline. You with me? This is about to get deep. Like, remember the scene from The Devil Wears Prada? The way I see it, you’re wearing cerulean blue – or in my case, I’m definitely wearing slides year round, boyish suits, a whole array of fugly shoes – because at some point, Phoebe said so.

Enter the colour red. Or specifically, that specific black/white/red combo, ideally worn with mis-matched black-and-white 90’s lace up sandals and bright red nail polish, first seen on the Céline SS17 catwalk. Despite my well-documented aversion to colour, when I saw the show I remember sitting up and thinking hey, this is a trend I can dip my toe(s) into…

(Pause to groan).

Now, the sad news is the hubby has officially vetoed the mis-matched shoes. Marriage is all about compromise, and we agreed he should get to veto one look per season; this time if I remember correctly it was something about him thinking I’d look like I escaped an insane asylum (uh, a very chic insane asylum thank you very much…). So fine, no mis-matched shoes. Instead, I’m going for the next best thing: black-and-white slides, together with bright red nail polish.

Now, I actually picked up the slides back in the Fall, but never wore them, thanks to the misera-bleh weather – so I’m thrilled to finally pull them out the closet. For polish I decided to check out what Deborah Lippman had to offer, since I’m really loving their toxin free ethos (which can be broadly summed up as, less toxins, equals less endocrine disruption, equals less hormonal wifey – I’m paraphrasing here). I picked Old Flame – which I can only describe a ‘real’ red, not too orange, not too pink – which looks bomb paired with a bright red lip (like Laura Mercier Velour Lip in Addiction).

Last but not least, a special shout-out to Dr Hauschka Neem nail oil and Aesop Resurrection hand balm, which I’m consuming in industrial quantities at the moment – I honestly can’t recommend highly enough.
